from Berwick's pitchside reporter
The blues travelled to Berwick after a lay week, with the autumn internationals. The Blues were keen to try and get back to winning ways, but knew the hosts would prove tough opposition.
As the game started the Blues applied pressure to the home team, with a clearance kick charged down. As the blues attempted to gather the ball, a knock on ensued and Berwick managed to clear their lines.
After 4 mins the Blues found themselves behind, as a good Berwick team try saw them lead 7-0.
The Blues responded quickly and within 8 minutes were level. Some good recycling from the forwards, after a series of rucks and a good line break, saw Nailatica break 2 tackles to score, converted by Smith.
Kirkcaldy were on the front foot and had Berwick under intense pressure. A good throw in the lineout from Hamilton, saw the blues pack arrow through the Berwick defence, with Salt getting the score. Again converted by Smith. 7-14
As game ebbed and flowed, Berwick then hit back with a try on the 30min mark. As they wrong footed the blues defence to score an unconverted try 12-14. The Blues then conceded a penalty for a high tackle and Berwick converted this to take the lead 15-14, if slightly against the run of play.
An immediate response from the blues from the kick off, saw Kirkcaldy awarded a penalty, duly converted by Smith for the blues to lead 17-18 h/t.
The second half was not a great spectacle, as both sides made a number mistakes and handling errors. Lacking any continuity in the second half, with a stop start game. Both teams were putting pressure on the receivers, leading to a number of knock ins and scrums.
On 60 minutes Berwick scored from a catch and drive at the lineout, which was well defended by the Blues initially, before Berwick recycled and burrowed over the line. 22-18
Within minutes the blues talisman Brown, added to his try count for the season, which was again converted by Smith. 22-24.
With 5 minutes to play the game became more frantic and hectic as both sides sought a winner. The blues forwards saw out the game comfortably, with some good recycling, before the ball was kicked off the field of play.
Always a tricky away game, which the blues were delighted to win after 3 successive defeats. The league is one of the closest, with on their day any team capable of winning.
