Kirkcaldy2XV 31 v 3 Hamilton2XV

Defence wins matches! That was the call before the game and what a display the whole squad put on. With a full squad of 20, and after the good win last weekend, the Blues 2s were really up to gain revenge against a strong Hamilton2XV

Kirkcaldy2XV opened the scoring after 10 mins. Good lineout ball was secured and controlled, Marshall finally going over after a good drive. The backs were trying to move the ball on every occasion but some some good defence from Hamilton aided by still a bit of rustiness, prevented the wingers the space they desired. Hamilton reduced the gap to 2 points with a well struck penalty after 20 mins. The home side scored again soon after. Oliver stretching over the line from close range following good work by both back and forwards.

Half time Kirkcaldy2XV 10 v 3 Hamilton2XV

The second half was a tale of taking the opportunities created. Browning scored his first try for years, and the home side's 3rd of the day, again with the help of his forward mates and a good lineout take and drive. Having a secure set piece makes a huge difference. With both scrum but especially lineouts working well, Kirkcaldy had a superb platform to build on. The backs were defending well and gave little room for their opponents to move into. Territory was hard fought for but Littlejohn put his team in good places to make Hamilton attack from deep. Castle-Smith was always keeping his forwards going and kept Hamilton honest around the fringes. The bonus point try was a spectacular effort. An excellent lineout throw by Marshall hit Porter in the centre. And his strong running power did the rest from 30 mtrs. Very pleasing as it had never worked in practise.

The full squad was utilised without the standards dropping. The next 15 mins possession was dominated by Hamilton. The home defence though, never gave them any real chances, with Thomson,Marshall and co. knocking Hamilton's big forward's back time and time again. Douglas, Wilson and their buddies giving no time or space to Hamilton's backs. The final score of the day came in the form of a typical Walker run. 5 mtrs of hard running scoring under the posts. An excellent squad defensive display aided by good set piece set Kirkcaldy up for this hard fought win.

Final score Kirkcaldy2XV 31 v 3 Hamilton2XV.
