Kirkcaldy 2XV 12 Hamilton 2XV 27
The Kirkcaldy 2XV were hoping to build on last weeks good win, away to Hamilton 2XV, but with only 16 players available this was going to be a tall order. Kirkcaldy started well with a Gilmour penalty attempt just falling short after 5 mins. The Hamilton set piece was always on top but like last week the Blues forwards more than matched them around the park and in the loose.
Hamilon opened the scoring after good work on the touchline gave them the platform to cross the Blues goal line. Kirkcaldy responded well and after some excellent work by Davies and Gilmour had produced a 5mtr penalty, Castle-Smith took a quick tap to dive over. Gilmour added the extra's.
Hamilton again went in front after the Kirkcaldy defence had been sucked in creating gaps out wide. Porter was having a strong game and after another strong run he just couldn't link with his support which would have created a certain try. It was Porter again who was denied after being held up over the line, the referee missing that he had dotted the ball against the foot of the post.
The next 10 minutes cost the Blues 10 points. Missed tackles and a yellow card, allowing the home team a couple of easy tries to make the half time score 22 v 7.
The second half started with a slightly different game plan for the Blues. Both sets of players were getting a bit annoyed with each other, and after Denholm had scored for the second week in succession, the Blues sniffed a possible victory. The next 20 minutes saw both sides battling hard to try and gain the upper hand. Hamilton again defending well and holding up a Blues drive over the line. The Kirkcaldy defence repaid the compliment minutes later, but after the Hamilton forwards again dominated a lineout, they drove forward for well controlled try.
Although the Kirkcaldy team never gave up there was no more scoring making the final score Hamilton2XV 27 v 12 Kirkcaldy2XV. There were some really good individual performances this week with many players stepping up to the mark. A full squad would have certainly made this game very much winable.
