As the game developed Kirkcaldy looked the more purposeful team and their speed about the park constantly stretched the Morgan defence. This pressure continued and it was no surprise when the Blues won a penalty kicked by Sanft to open up a 3-0 lead. in the sixteenth minute. Two minutes later Morgan’s Greg Mason was caught in possession in front of his posts and failed to release for another penalty kicked by Sanft
Kirkcaldy control in the second quarter effectively settled the outcome of the game. Two tries from the ever alert Sanft pulled the Blues away and although Graeme Kiddie slotted a Morgan penalty a 20-3 Kirkcaldy advantage on the half hour mark gave the Dundonians a mountain to climb to get back into contention.
The game continued to go the way of the Blues and a further try from winger Blair Skipper converted by Sanft made the half time score line 27-3 for Kirkcaldy.
The Morgan effort had been regularly punctuated by injuries and by mid way through the second half their front row had been so disrupted that the referee called for uncontested scrums which was much to disadvantage of the rampant Kirkcaldy pack. At least twice the possibility of a push over try was denied them and the threat of a pick up from No 8 Craig Wilson was nullified.
Greg Wallace came off the bench in the second half and he quickly made his presence felt. A Sanft penalty to the corner produced a line-out from which Wallace peeled off for a typically dynamic try converted by the stand off.
Constantly under pressure Morgan made every attempt to keep the ball fluid. Kirkcaldy usually snuffed out their scoring attempts but with eight minutes remaining winger Mark Hopkins left his cover to slip down the blind side for a try converted by Kiddie. By this time Kirkcaldy had added a fifth unconverted try from replacement Ryan Murphy to emphasise a comfortable win.
Kirkcaldy remain in third place in the table with a six point gap between them and second place Peebles who are now in a rich vane of form. All indications point to a promotion decider when the Tweedsiders come to Beveridge Park on the first Saturday of the year.
