Broughton Ladies 5 Kirkcaldy Ladies 10

Kirkcaldy Ladies made the short trip over to Edinburgh on Sunday to play top of the league Broughton. With clear blue skies and a heavy pitch the ladies started brightly playing down the hill.
The Ladies got some early decisions from the referee and capitalised on this with a dominant scrum and good territorial gain. Unfortunately they were turned over in the 22 and Broughton were able to clear their lines. The first half continued in this way with good driving runs by the forwards and some slick hands from the backs. With a very solid scrum platform Kirkcaldy started to win some opposition ball and after probing drives the ball was whipped out to full back Nicki Redpath who scored the only try of the half. Her added conversion made it 0-7 at half-time.
The second half started with Broughton fighting back and driving into the Kirkcaldy 22. The pace of the defensive line worked well and while the home side retained possession they were losing ground and retreating towards half way. It was hard work up the hill but soon Kirkcaldy were in the opposition 22 and should have looked at kicking the penalty they were awarded. Some good defence by Broughton kept them out.
Broughton took the upper hand for the next period of play and pushed Kirkcaldy back. Though the defence held firm for several phases, the ball was shipped out wide and the covering defence was unable to stop Broughton scoring. The try remained unconverted which made it 5-7 with 15 minutes to play.
Broughton kept looking for the winning score but Kirkcaldy defended well. Solid play saw Kirkcaldy keep the ball and push towards the opposition 22, where they earned a penalty. Redpath stepped up to score the three points to make it 5-10 at full-time.  A well worked team performance and a good win for the Ladies moving them to 4th in the league. Next week it's another short trip, to play Howe of Fife at Cupar.
