Melrose Ladies 0 Kirkcaldy Ladies 48

Kirkcaldy Ladies stepped into 2018 with style thanks to a confident eight try victory over Melrose Ladies, the match played at Liberton Rugby Club in Edinburgh.

Captain Alison Massie started the scoring early with the first of her three tries, impressive especially playing out of the second row. Tries from outside half Sandra Laird, inside centre Brenda Brogan and wing forward Fiona Milne followed before Massie got her second before half time. Three of these scores were converted by full back Nicki Redpath to make it 0-31 at half-time.

Kirkcaldy were now playing against a strong breeze, having used it to their advantage in the first half with tactical kicking. The second period required tighter play and a change of tactics. Strong defence kept Melrose at bay, as the home struggled to keep up with Kirkcaldy's fitness and physicality. This was shown by Melrose ending up with only 12 players on the pitch for the last 10 minutes due to injury.

Two long range scores from Redpath were followed by the most popular try of the day from the captain.  Taking the ball on her own 10 metre line Massie broke clear, using her powerful hand-off to break free from covering tacklers. Against the wind and with tiring legs Massie worked hard to get across the line, cheered on all the way by the travelling support.  Redpath added another conversion round off the scoring. Bonus point win and excellent performance. To their credit, Melrose fought hard for the full 80 minutes, testing the Kirkcaldy defence with their strong scrum and class backs at 12 and 15.

Player of the match could have been given to any of the nineteen Kirkcaldy players but Emma Dyce picked up the award for her strong running in attack and tackling in defence. Next week Kirkcaldy travel south to play Annan Warriors.
