Glasgow University 5 - Kirkcaldy Ladies 6

Kirkcaldy Ladies travelled through to Glasgow for their second league match, against the University team who started their campaign well. As expected the pitch was heavy and the collisions even heavier. With only one replacement available it was going to be a long hard shift for the players.

Kirkcaldy started well and took an early lead after three minutes when Brenda Brogan slotted home a penalty. Both defences were superb all day and it was difficult for both sides to make easy yards. The Blues Ladies battled hard with strong running and clever use of the close game, though the amount of penalties given away was a concern. It allowed the students to take quick taps to try and break through, however they were repelled by some big tackles. It wasn't until the last play of the first half after a string of advantages that Glasgow University breached the Kirkcaldy line, giving the home side a 5-3 lead at half-time.

The second half was almost a carbon copy of what had gone before, except for the final outcome. Kirkcaldy retained more of the ball but had to work hard for any metres gained. Brogan kicked her second penalty to regain the lead 5-6. The forward pack kept their concentration and the backs were tackling and communicating well in attack but especially in defence. Even after a tough shift the fitness shone through with the forwards still looking for work in the final moments of the game, allowing Kirkcaldy Ladies to secure a great win against a good side.

This was the first win for a few years in Glasgow which pleased the team even more. A special mention for the referee, who had an excellent game and explained every decision he made.
