Ladies undone in season opener

KIRKCALDY LADIES 24 ANNAN WARRIORS 31

Kirkcaldy Ladies welcomed newly-promoted Annan Warriors to Beveridge Park for the first league game of the season. With a game already under their belt it was the visitors who started brighter, and after 20 minutes Annan had two tries and 12 points on the scoreboard.

Kirkcaldy finally got their game going and after good ball retention, new girl Rose Dolan was put clear to score out wide. Another newbie Hollie Sharp was unlucky not to score when she misjudged the lines on the pitch. The ball was recycled though and it was Dolan again who finished it off. Unfortunately both conversions were missed to leave Kirkcaldy two points down at half time.
The Kirkcaldy coaches were looking for the home team to continue their momentum from the latter stages of the first half but it was Annan who had regrouped better. Three long range breakaway tries aided by some poor defence gave them a 21 point lead with 15 minutes to play.

The hosts had left it late again but never gave up. Some better play and clinical finishing by Dolan gave the girls something to play for in the last 10 minutes. The forwards were dominant in the scrums but the touchline drills were not up to scratch, allowing Annan off the hook.

However Kirkcaldy finished well with Cassie McMahon squeezing the ball down under the posts to secure a try bonus point. Laird added the conversion to gain a losing bonus point.  Rustiness played a large part in this defeat, but four tries scored gives the squad a platform to build on ahead of their next match in two weeks time.
