On Saturday 6th May 2017 Kirkcaldy Rugby club’s senior, ladies and colts 7s teams attended a sunny but breezy Duffus Park, Cupar for the annual Howe of Fife 7s tournament.
The seniors were drawn in a tough group alongside 2 Scots from Edinburgh and Morgan FP rugby club, the ladies pool contained Watsonians and Melrose and the colts had Howe B and Glenrothes to compete with.
Due to several teams failing to turn up on time for the start the schedule had to be altered for the tournament giving Kirkcaldy seniors only 10 minutes to prepare for their first tie against 2 Scots.
This showed in the result with Kirkcaldy losing out but performing much better in the second half. Morgan Academy FP’s failure to attend meant a place in the plate semi-final for the blues, where their opponents would be Dunfermline. Kirkcaldy ran out easy victors in this match and headed into the plate final to face charity team and home fan favourites ‘Seabass’, a Howe select team. In an end to end affair the lead changed hands a number of times but drawing on their experience from winning at Crieff last week Kirkcaldy ran out winners 22-19 to lift their second piece of silverware in consecutive weeks.

The colts went through the league phase of their competition undefeated with a tight victory against Howe B and a runaway result against Glenrothes. This led to a semi-final that was probably the best match of the whole tournament against Glenalmond College. Kirkcaldy got off to a slow start with a few mistakes but dominated the middle section of the tie. Glenalmond came back strongly but the colts managed to hold on for the win. In the final they faced a very good home team who ran out winners, as they had done recently at Kirkcaldy’s own 7s tournament.
Team; Anderson S (capt), Mckervail S, Barclay S, Barclay J, Henderson E, Pilmur C, Ramsay C, Sutcliffe Y, Westwood R and Dumbreck E The ladies couldn’t have had a tougher start than against recently crowned Division 1 champions Watsonians. A one sided match where Watsons ran out comfortable winners. In their second match the ladies were pitted against Melrose (where 7s was discovered). In a dramatic match Kirkcaldy edged out their opponents to go into to the semi-final against the hosts Howe Harlequins. Another tight affair between the two local rivals saw the home team sneak the match 12-10 to progress to their own final.
