A blustery day at Beverage Park welcomed our visitors from Carnoustie who began the game with real intent and set their stall out to pressurise the Blues 2’s in the early period of the match.
Kirkcaldy weathered the early attacks and sticking to the defensive game plan frustrated Carnoustie and denied them any possession of the ball inside the home 22.
The Blues 2’s went up a gear with slick to watch and clinically finished tries at the halfway point in the first half. The game plan in both attack and defence was working nicely and for all Carnoustie’s efforts had come to nothing.
As both sides jousted in midfield Kirkcaldy were reduced to 14 men for a yellow card and Carnoustie made little headway as the Blues 2’s stuck rigidly to their game plan.
In the second half Kirkcaldy 2’s took their eye off the prize and despite some reasonably sound defensive work, concentration levels dropped off and a try was conceded out wide following what could only be described as an error of judgement, the try was converted and it was 14 -7 to the home side and the game suddenly looked different.
Some adjustments to the line up were made, bearing in mind the personnel available today for specialist positions and the Blues 2’s hit back with another nice piece of play to score an unconverted try in the corner. 19 – 7
The next period of play provided some bumpy moments for the home side and as we were without a recognised Hooker what can only be described as a bizarre lineout decision cost the Blues 2’s dearly, a converted try was the result and suddenly it was 19-14 and the Blues 2’s had lost some of their composure.
Another error of judgement when coming out of the 22 followed and Carnoustie being the side they are punished the home side with an unconverted try, 19 -19 and it was definitely game on as the visitors began to believe in themselves once more.
The game plan needed to be re-enforced and the message was duly delivered along with substitutions and a re- jig of personnel.
Message received and the Blues 2’s delivered a rapid response with 2 converted tries in a five minute period as they swept Carnoustie aside with more slick play and superb handling. 33-19.
Carnoustie had no answer to Kirkcaldy 2’s today when they got into their rhythm, but no Blues 2’s game is without drama in one form or other.
Tries today from Stuart Henderson, Sean McKervall and three tries for Cameron Pilmer made the difference when it mattered. A satisfying outcome for the 2’s today, some great play, some dodgy decision making and a match that could well have been lost in recent seasons was turned around by some real determination and no little skill.
33 -19 Final Score.
