Strathmore U18 14 Kirkcaldy U18 25
Under the lights at Forfar the Colts beat a determined Strathmore team although at times the victory was not a foregone conclusion. The game started with handling errors due to the constant drizzle but thereafter some fine handling moves from both teams made the game entertaining. After deciding to run the ball in front of the posts from a very kickable penalty Kirkcaldy found themselves camped on their own line and conceded the first score to go 0-7 down.
Connor Wood then made his customary score from a short drive after a tap penalty. After this some positional changes saw Rhys Bonner move to Number 8 - Strathmore simply couldn't deal with his pace and energy and he duly obliged with a fine score leaving several stranded defenders in his wake.
Further Kirkcaldy pressure on the Strathmore try-line saw a challeged clearance land straight into Rory Brown's hands to dive over for a gift of a try converted by Jamie Ferguson to make the half time score 17-7.
Kirkcaldy started the second half on top and again Rhys Bonner powered his way through for his second score-this should have been the signal to kill the game off but Strathmore to their credit kept plugging away and were rewarded with another score, well converted from near the touchline.
At this point the momentum could have swung in the home team's favour but eventually after some fine pressure Kirkcaldy were awarded a penalty near the posts and decided quite rightly to go for goal this time-Finlay Smith kicked the goal to allow greater breathing space before the final whistle sounded.
The vocal travelling support went home encouraged and happy that a further victory had been achieved but unfotunately with such a late kick-off there was no time for picking up a traditional hot bridie in town.
