Stobswell 18 Kirkcaldy 2nd XV 22

The Blues 2s made the trip back over the Tay to play Stobswell on a lovely day for rugby. The pitch was extremely narrow which did not suit our style, but did play into the hands of the home side’s big forwards. Stobswell won the toss and decided to play uphill in the first half, meaning that Kirkcaldy had to try and get a good lead to take into the second half.

Stobswell opened the scoring with a well struck penalty after Kirkcaldy were caught offside at ruck time. The Blues 2s struck back within minutes. Good movement and ball retention gave Frew decent ball and when he and Hancock combined the ball was slipped to Chillifu to dot down in the corner. Another penalty to Stobswell put them back in front, before again a Kirkcaldy try regained the lead. Sheilds on his return squeezing over after good lead up work by his pack. Hancock adding the extras. The same player increased the lead with a penalty after some quick taps proved fruitless. More points were required before half time and after a series of drives, Frew nipped over to score with the conversion being added again by Hancock. Half time Stobswell 6 v 22 Kirkcaldy 2xv

The second half was a real defensive effort. Stobswell’s big pack were having greater success in the mauling and started to dominate. The Kirkcaldy backs had the measure of their opponents, but on the very few occasions they got the ball, the narrow pitch meant there was little if any space to exploit their pace. Stobswell scored a try after another maul was put to good use. Kirkcaldy had to defend hard for the remainder of the game and got sucked into a real forward dog fight. Some excellent defence from the whole squad meant that Stobswell became increasingly frustrated. This did not change the way they went about things though and they were rewarded with another 7 pointer. This lead to a last frantic 5 mins. Kirkcaldy still very much under pressure but holding out well. Kirkcaldy’s lineout had functioned well all game and it would be this department that probably sealed the win. A Stobswell throw in 10mtrs from the Kirkcaldy line was well won and secured at the front by Kilgour and his supporters, Stobswell strayed offside and with the ref calling time over Castle-Smith kicked the ball out of play to end a hard faught game. Full time Stobswell 18 v 22 Kirkcaldy 2xv.

An extremely hard game but a wins a win. Really great to see players returning and playing their first games of the season. The squad is getting stronger every game which bodes well for the remaining games
