Kirkcaldy represented at European touch event

Under18 mixed finalists - Wales and Scotland
Kirkcaldy Rugby Club was well represented at this year’s European Junior Touch Championships in Holland with Colts players Sean McKervail (Scotland U18 boys) and Max Hadoke (Scotland U18 mixed), and Sean’s sister Kaylee McKervail (European select U15 mixed), all heavily involved in the action.

The Championships took place at the Dutch Olympic Sports Centre at Papendal in Arnhem, just a short journey from the landing sites and the famous “Bridge Too Far” of Operation Market Garden. Three hundred and seventy players (representing 23 teams and 10 nations) plus coaches, physios, referees and spectators gathered for 3 days of intense, competitive action played in a spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

The tournament marked significant progress for the relatively new Scotland Touch squad (represented at U15 mixed, U18 boys and U18 mixed levels). The squad also provided 2 players for the European U15 mixed team, which recorded back-to-back wins against Germany to finish 7th in their group. A fine outcome for a group of players who never had the opportunity to train together before the Championships.

The Scotland U15 mixed team earned wins against France, Ireland, Europe and Germany, plus a 6-6 draw with England, before securing a fantastic third place after a thrilling 6-5 play-off win against the Middle East. The U18 boys also took third place after edging Wales 5-3 in a tense final match.

The U18 mixed team went one better. A successful group stage saw them record wins against the Middle East, France, Holland, Ireland, England and Guernsey, with their only defeat a last minute 6-5 loss to Wales. The tournament finale was level 3 apiece at half time but Scotland eventually succumbed 6-4 to tournament winners Wales.

These results capped a fantastic, successful tournament for a Scotland squad that continues to improve and has strong foundations to build on for next year’s championships in Dublin.
