Kirkcaldy RFC‘s annual seven-a-side tournament, sponsored this year by the national legal firm and specialist injury lawyers - Digby Brown, will again be staged on the second Saturday of April
This year it will be a hugely expanded event, with eight women’s sides and eight Under 18s sides competing in their respective tournaments as alongside sixteen sides competing in the traditional senior men’s competition for the Heggie Cup.
Last year’s competition was won in some style by Murrayfield Wanderers.
The day’s play will fully test Beveridge Park’s rugby facilities and will see play start at 12 noon with the senior final around 6pm.
Kirkcaldy Sevens started in 1950 with the cup donated by the then club president James Heggie
By the turn of the millennium the sevens game had diminished in appeal with the tournament frequently clashing with the playing of postponed league games and cup ties.
By 2002 it had disappeared altogether.
The tournament did not lie dormant for long and during his time in Kirkcaldy, Mike O’Donovan, a New Zealander, appreciated the value that the sevens format would bring to the fifteen-a-side game and revived it.
For several years Kirkcaldy sevens stuttered along but now there is a major effort being made to restore its old prestige, especially with the welcome new sponsorship from Digby Brown and the tournament growing with the addition of women’s and under 18 competitions.
There was a time when Kirkcaldy were all conquering in the sevens but as in the Fifteen-a-side game, the Blues have found times challenging over the last decade.
Former Samoan 7s international Quintan Sanft has brought through a talented group of young players at Beveridge Park who with the right guidance may make their mark in the abbreviated game.
Kirkcaldy hopes to welcome the following sides to the tournament:
Mens – Cartha Queens Park, Stirling County, Boroughmuir, Hamilton Dalziel, Perthshire, Dunfermline, Glenrothes, Murrayfield (others tbc)
Ladies – Cartha Queens Park, Stirling County, Watsons, Ayr (others tbc)
U18 – Waid, Ayr, Boroughmuir, BATs, Cartha Queens Park (others tbc)
