Photos by Ken Dunn The 2s had a full squad of 22 to choose from for this local derby, and that didn’t include the unlucky ones who had to watch from the stand. After a scrappy start to the game in which both sides were competing hard at the breakdowns, it was the home side who settled a wee bit quicker. Rhys Bonner opened the scoring after a slick backs move put him in under the posts. Glenrothes responded well, and with their big pack working hard they quickly made yards and put pressure on Kirkcaldy, unfortunately their backs could not continue the good work. The Kirkcaldy side began to take more control and Bonner added his and his teams second after slick handling put him in the corner. Walker added the next after Graham had one disallowed following a disputed double movement. Half time Kirkcaldy 19 v 0 Glenrothes. A raft of changes at half time had the desired effect.
The handling, inter-play ad support between backs and forwards increased and the scores began to flow freely. Glenrothes began to tire which only created even more space for the 2s to exploit. 12 tries were scored with a good spread amongst the team. Wood had another strong game and Raeside controlled his young backs well. The ball was being kept alive as much as possible which suited the running power and pace of the 2s. Laird, C Wilson(3) and J Wilson(2) all scored, before what looked like a serious neck injury to the Glenrothes openside reduced them down to 14 players. The scoring and inter-play continued which meant further tries by Watson(2), Gray, Castle-Smith, Neilson and Low. Littlejohn adding 8 conversions. Final score Kirkcaldy 2XV 91 v 0 Glenrothes 2XV. After the hard graft was done in the first half, some of the handling and support play in the second was of the highest order and gave the decent sized crowd some good rugby to watch. Although we are still top of the league the next few matches will be a lot more difficult where the whole squad will be needed and patience may be a virtue. Photos by Ken Dunn
